I worked and lived in Afghanistan from January 2007 to April 2008. The first 6 months were relatively quiet but the situation deteriorated significantly in the following months. The Talibans were regaining control of various provinces. They launched attacks in regions known for their relative peacefulness. The suicide attack on a police station in Badakshan in July 2007 clearly indicated that the Talibans were expanding their area of activities. They eventually asserted themselves deep inside the capital with the attack on the Kabul Serena Hotel in January 2008 and more recently on the Indian Embassy in July 2008. The heavier restrictions on freedom of movement that followed each time were the most difficult for me to handle while life went on around me. What I missed most was walking in the streets and going to the bazaar, going where I wanted as much as I would have liked to. I found ways to "escape" a little and learn about Afghan culture and life and I do not regret not always sticking to the rules. Afghanistan is a beautiful country in spite of the numerous scars left by years of armed conflicts. But what made working and living there a wonderful experience has been the contact with the Afghans: a warm-at-heart, hospitable and very friendly people.
