THINKERS AND DOERS

PHOTOGRAPHERS

To Thinkers and Doers' Corner - Old street camera outside a photo shop in Kabul - Feb. 2007
I always seem to meet photographers. Coincidence or are there millions of professional photographers out there?
Those I met work with children, or document old disappearing religious rituals, or are travel reporters, cat photographers, or do world news photgraphy etc.
Some are struggling a lot, others are making a living from photography. While all have the same passion, their style, views on photography, and poles of interest are extremely varied.

Himalayan region

  • Anne Lelong - http://www.couleurs-himalaya.org/couleurs-himalaya.html
I met Anne in Kathmandu in 2003. She has wonderful shots of Tibet and Nepal, particularly of the remote Upper Dolpo region where she was running a school project. She did some cool stuff with street kids in Nepal as well and takes some great B&W pictures.
  • Mani Lama - Check PhotoCircle for info
While Mani Lama is not a personal friend, he is featured here because he is the only photographer I bought a photo from! Great photos of Nepal and Tibet. Mani Lama is a famous Nepali photographer.
  • Robert Dompnier - http://www.photos-bhutan.com/en/
I met Robert in Bhutan in 2002. In 2004 he was regularly going to Merak-Sakten, an area in Bhutan still closed to tourism at the time. He also writes for travel magazines.
  • Yannick Jooris - http://www.onasia.com/content/members.aspx?code=yjo
I met Yannick in 2000 in Bhutan. She also makes videos and is currently still working on documenting old Bhutanese religious rituals. She has an impressive collection of pictures and videos on Bhutan.
Elsewhere in Asia
  • Amélie Coulombel - http://www.amelimage.com
Amélie was spending quite some time outside school gates to capture images of school children when I met her in Burma in 2006. She has travelled and photographed extensively in Asia. She launched her first exhibition in France in 2007. Her website is beautiful.

Outside the box
  • Gil Chamberland - http://www.cat-spirit.eu
I met Gil in Burma in 2006. Gil is a Cat Photographer, a rare species! One of his photographs made the cover page of Geo magazine.

"Street photography"
  • A.K. Kimoto - http://www.spidersandflies.com
A.K was particularly interested in drug addicts and the mentally ill during the few months he spent in Kabul in 2007.
